Key Aims:

Xploro is a digital platform that bridges the healthcare information gap for young children, with the goal to transform the healthcare experience for children and their families. D4D worked with Xploro, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the NIHR HRC in Paediatrics and Child Health to design a series of materials for younger adults between the ages of 16 and 20 to explore if Xploro can be adapted to different age ranges.

Impact:

Currently there is a healthcare information gap for young people who are due to receive medical therapies and interventions. This exacerbates anxiety and maked entering clinical pathways extremely daunting. Xploro was developed to help alleviate the worries of children using engaging educational content through gamification and personalised experiences to improve well-being and confidence.

Through co-funded research alongside Birmingham Women’s and Children Hospital and the NIHR’s HRC in Paediatrics and Child Health, design needs for a future version targeted at young people between the ages of 16 and 20 has been developed. This has been completed through collecting patient engagement and feedback alongside clinical advice within the mental health services at Birmingham’s Children Hospital. Through this information we have been able to collate a clear set of design needs to therefore develop a pilot version of the platform.

We hope through this work we will be able to improve services and the patient care pathway for younger people, reducing anxiety around mental health, medical therapies and interventions. Through improving health literacy and growing confidence in understanding of conditions and processes we believe this will help develop a level of trust and understanding, improving relationships between young patients and clinicians.

Project Team and Funding: This was a collaborative project between Devices for Dignity, the NIHR HRC in Paediatrics and Child Health, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Xploro. It was co-funded by Devices for Dignity and the NIHR HRC in Paediatrics and Child Health.
