SHAPES: Assessing the impact of a novel therapeutic electrical stimulation device for post-stroke arm spasticity

Generating relevant clinical and economic evidence to assess impact and aid future implementation of novel health technology.

Key Aims:

  • Investigate the cost-effectiveness of a novel post-stroke spasticity device therapy.
  • Assess the patient experience including of device usability and engagement.
  • Inform the most appropriate stroke patient sub-groups and timing of device access in the patient journey

Challenge

  • The journey from an innovation concept to a widely adopted and successful HealthTech product can be long, complex and arduous, with many difficulties en route
  • Effective planning before ‘setting off’, including a validated Value Proposition (VP) and PICO statement, can predict and thus avoid many of the pitfalls

Our Vision

  • To get safe, effective, appropriately regulated HealthTech into use and evidence benefits
  • Develop a strategic framework for early identification of potential barriers/evidence requirements required for future HealthTech implementation
  • Deliver targeted innovator support for projects including how to identify gaps (in capabilities, evidence, user perspective) and address adoption barriers
  • Co-develop a process and associated tools for the capture of interim and long-term impact metrics to support HealthTech adoption
  • Enhance innovator knowledge and skills to support development and implementation of technologies that deliver patient benefit, will be commercially viable and help businesses to thrive
Pathways to Implementation and Impact theme image

Our Approach

  • The ‘pathway to implementation’ part of the theme involves identifying actions that will need to be taken to avoid or overcome barriers to adoption. The ‘Impact’ part refers to measurable results of introducing the technology; ideally a combination of positive benefits for patients, the health and social care system, industry and the UK economy
  • The PII and MI Themes will collaborate closely - with PII working with innovators based within, or collaborating with, industry to identify WHAT evidence will be needed and MI supporting innovators in HOW to generate it, informed by PPIE/EDI input
